MHA 515 University of Phoenix Everett Rogers Diffusion of Innovation Theory Discussion

Everett Rogers’s diffusion of innovation as mentioned in the article, is a process that occurs among people in response to learning about an innovation such as the new evidence-based approach for extending or improving health care. Rogers theory points out four elements of diffusion that involves innovations, communication channels, time and social system. Rogers’s diffusion theory is related to change because it is about adapting to innovations to bring changes. (Dearing, Cox, 2018). Rogers’ theory describes a 5-step innovation decision process. Potential adopters of the innovation pass through 5 stages: knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation. (Leming-Lee, Watters, 2019). When a innovations are implemented within a organization for a change it is important for the staff to understand the change and accept the new change by adopting to it by abandoning the prior one. Advancement in health care and health care professionals using advancing technology can be related to Rogers’s theory of diffusion because it is more about understanding, adopting and having the knowledge to make use of the innovations to increase the productivity within the organization. Technology diffusion; understand the end user of the technology , recognize the impact of significant behavior change and consider the business case for the adoption of new technology change. (Cain, Mittman, 2002).

Diffusion of innovation theory, as proposed by Everett Rogers, is a process that occurs among individuals in response to learning about a new innovation or approach. In the context of healthcare, it can be applied to the adoption and integration of evidence-based practices and advancements in healthcare technology. Rogers identified four elements of diffusion: innovations, communication channels, time, and social systems.

Rogers’ theory is closely related to the concept of change. It highlights the importance of individuals adapting to innovations in order to bring about meaningful changes within organizations and improve healthcare outcomes. The theory describes a 5-step innovation decision process, which includes knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation. This framework acknowledges that potential adopters of an innovation progress through these stages as they learn about and eventually adopt the innovation.

In the context of healthcare, it is crucial for healthcare professionals to understand and accept new changes by adopting evidence-based practices and new technologies. By doing so, they can increase their productivity and ultimately improve patient care. Technology diffusion in healthcare involves understanding the end user, recognizing the impact of behavior change, and considering the business case for adopting new technologies.

Overall, Rogers’ diffusion of innovation theory provides a valuable framework for understanding and promoting change in healthcare. By applying this theory, healthcare organizations and professionals can effectively integrate new innovations and practices, leading to positive outcomes for patients and the healthcare system as a whole.
